Health Truths Busted

One week caffeine is good and popping multi-vitamins is bad, but sooner or later, we find contradictory research - which apparently is the norm in the science world. How confusing! So, is it good or is it bad? Nobody knows, but here is what I've read in Women's Health October 2012 edition:

Flossing may help prevent heart diseases.
There is no proof, no solid evidence to support the idea that poor oral hygiene causes heart attacks. However, keep on flossing! As my dentist says, flossing reduces your risk for gum diseases which can lead to tooth loss. So, do the deed at least once a day.

Soy is a no-no if you or a family member had breast cancer.
Doctors were concerned that tofu and edamame could promote the development of cancer by mimicking estrogen which breast tumors are fueled by. Well, it turns out that Soy foods can be safe for all women, and can protect other cancers, but only in moderation. Avoid concentrated levels of Soy which can be found in soy chips, soy powders, fake-meat products, etc.

Fat free salad dressing is the best choice.
Turns out that adding fat to veggies makes each bite more nutritious. Salads are bursting with important vitamins and minerals, and fat enhances the absorption of compounds in veggies called carotenoids, which may reduce risk of cancer and vision loss. So? The best move is to drizzle your salad with canola or olive oil based dressings, but still avoid creamy Italian or blue cheese dressings.

Popping a daily multi-vitamin is a smart habit.
Truth is multis may not always help, and could be toxic in high dosage. It would be best to focus on getting vitamins from food. If you generally consume veggies, fruits, lean proteins, whole grains and low fat dairy, and avoid bad fats and added sugar, you should be in good nutritional shape. But if you are losing weight and cutting calories, the multis could be a good idea.

Yoga is gentle on the body.
Your body needs time to bend, and yoga can hurt you. Do yoga mindfully. Find a good practitioner  and take your time. Expert say to "get the key pieces in place first" as injuries may strike when transitioning from one pose to the next. Pause. Breathe. Take your time.

You should replace your toothbrush every three months.
True. Even if you regularly sanitize your brush, you can't repair worn down bristles, says Nicole Holland, a dentist in Boston. After 3 months, your toothbrush will become less effective.

It's fine to keep all of your Over-the-Counter meds in the bathroom.
False. You might be better off storing medicine in your bedroom. "A bathroom's moist air and warm temperatures can make medicine expire faster" says Dr. McDonnell. Always keep your drugs in a dry, controlled environment.

GlossyBox Canada / November 2012 / Festive Fun

The November 2012 edition of GlossyBox Canada was filled with goodies to get us ready for the Holidays Season. And once again, Glossy included Golden Ticket items to a lucky few - unfortunately, it wasn't me. The box seemed rather bland, and not as exciting as I was hoping it would be, is it really worth the $21? The price increase made me unsubscribe for the next few months until I decide if I'd like to continue. November did not feel 'deluxe' to me at all.

November Box:
Nicole by OPI Kardashian Kolor Holiday Shades / Full size / $10.99
Kryolan For GlossyBox Blusher in Glossy Pink / Full size / $16.73
Nexxus Salon Hair Care: Hydration Kit / sample size / $3 worth
Vitabath Shower Gel / sample size / $4
Maybelline MNY My Gloss / Full size / $7.49
Curel Hand & Cuticle Therapy Cream / Full size / $3.99
UBER Loyalty Card / 50% off

There was also Glossy Magazine, but unfortunately, there is very little value in it.

Grade: C+

Product Review: Avene Thermal Spring Water

I've been using Avene Thermal Spring Water for about 3-4 months before I ran out. It's refreshing during summer months, and perfect to use on cold/dry winter days. The product claims to soothe, soften, and restore skin's natural balance: "Clinically proven by over 300 studies to calm, soothe and soften the skin.  Used since 1743 in the Hydrotherapy Center to treat serious dermatological conditions such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema." The website even offers an option to view clinical data, and offers a list of uses:

Dermatological care: Post surgery, Post procedure, Redness-prone skin / inflammation, Keratosis-prone, scaly skin Eczema / atopic dermatitis, Allergic reactions / sensitive skin / irritation,  Burning / stinging / itching / tingling Daily care: After cleansing, After shaving/after waxing,  After exercise,  During travel,  Sunburn, burns, Diaper rash,  To set makeup

One of the best uses for the Avene thermal water is definitely after exercise. I spray it a few times on my skin, and wait 2-3 minutes to air dry. It then helps my skin feel much more hydrated and fresh.

Here is a list of benefits from Avene official website:
  • Calms, soothes and softens
  • Rich in silicate and trace elements
  • Low salt mineral content does not dry out the skin
  • pH 7.5 – perfect balance of anions and cations
  • Bottled directly from the source – bacteriologically pure
  • Preservative-free
  • Hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic
And while it may feel like simply water in a can, the tap water we use to wash our face is not all that great for us. The running water often contains skin drying chemicals and chlorine. Many of us get that tight feeling after washing our faces with regular water. Avene helps to relieve that drying effect of regular water. It's a great toner too.

PROS:
  • Perfect for refreshing my face during the day
  • Makes powder foundation look less powdery
  • Great for toning before makeup application
  • Gentle, without perfume
  • Works well for sensitive and oily skin
  • Hydrating
  • Easy to use
  • High ratings on makeupalley.com : 4.2/5
CONS:
  • Would be better if it cost less
From my experience, Avene Thermal Spring Water spray definitely works, and I will repurchase it again and again. Perhaps, I will let my boyfriend try it out next as he suffers from severe eczema.

Value: 4.5/5
Quality: 4.5/5
Performance: 5/5
Packaging: 4/5
Price: $$

Overall: 4.5/5

Would I use it again? YES!

Product Review: Tints of Nature Conditioning Permanent Colour

While I haven't dyed my hair for at least 9 months, my mother not only dyes her hair regularly, but also has tried numerous brands of hair dye. I have convinced her to try Tints of Nature - Conditioning Permanent Colour in 7R Soft Copper Blonde. This was her first time trying out a natural hair colouring system. The product claims to be free of ammonia, resorcinol and parabens. The colour gently cover grey, and uses natural ingredients such as orange, aloe, comfrey, grapefruit and chamomile. Tints of Nature is a highly effective permanent hair colourant made with up to 60% certified organic ingredients.  And while not being a 100% natural option, Tints of Nature is a good alternative, a gentler way to colour your hair with the lowest possible level of PPDs.

GlossyBox Canada October 2012 / Pink Beauty

The Canadian edition of GlossyBox October was dedicated towards Breast Cancer awareness month. This month, 50 lucky Glossies received a golden ticket item - a piece of jewelry! Unfortunately, I wasn't one of the winners. Were you?

Overall, I would give this box a B+. This lipstick due is a handy tool to have and is Australian. I love trying new international brands. Although, we've already had something very similar - a lipstick/lipbalm duo. In October's box we received 3 full sized items, which makes our $15 investment kind of worth it.
Unfortunately, next month the price will go up...and becoming a whooping $21 monthly fee! Have you cancelled your subscription because of the fee? I'm certainly thinking about it. Lamenting.

This month's worth is approximately $75, mainly because the lipstick itself is $40.

Full List:

  • Jouviance Rejuvenating Anti-Aging Cream Normal to Dry Skin Treatment / Extremely luxurious face cream, gently formulated to hydrate and increase the firmness of your skin.
  • Modelco Flipstick Lip Duo / in Dusk Lipstick and Striptease Gloss / Shine Ultra Lip Gloss can be worn alone or layered over Lipstick Lip couture for hours of unbeatable shine / FULL SIZE / $38.75
  • Zoya Nail Polish / in Rory / FULL SIZE / $8.00 / Toxin Free
  • Sebastian Professional Trilliance Shampoo & Conditioner /  Cleanses and polished the hair surface to enable greater light reflection, creating gorgeous natural shine.
  • Gilette Venus / Venus & Olay / FULL SIZE / $16.99
Another great box. It will be hard to say good-bye. Let's hope that the price increase will guarantee some amazing products. I heard the U.S. box while being more expensive, even had a Burberry lipstick!

Product Review: Giovanni 2Chic Brazilian Keratin & Argan Oil

Recently, I have tried Giovanni - 2Chic Brazilian Keratin & Argan Oil Ultra-Sleek Shampoo and Conditioner available at local drug stores such as Walmart and Target. My hair is long, wavy, thick and freezy in texture, color treated, requires a lot of shampooing and deep conditioning. This product claims that it will "smooth every strand, seduce with shine, banish frizz, and achieve enviable manageability."

The Giovanni 2Chic Brazilian Keratin & Argan Oil Shampoo & Conditioner both have generally average ratings. It's definitely not a super high end, high quality product, but worth trying if purchased on sale. The scent is OK, but could be worse. It reminds me of coconut and cheap Suave conditioners and shampoos. It didn't straighten my hair all that much, and instead made it somewhat dry.

Pros:
  • no chemicals, certified organic, 100% vegetarian ingredients
  • affordable
  • could work well for fine hair
  • hair feels thicker and heavier
  • great for shorter hair
  • could work well on African American hair
Cons:
  • not very moisturizing
  • doesn't perform well with thick hair
  • not recommended for longer hair

Value: 3.5/5
Quality: 3.5/5
Performance: 3/5
Packaging: 4/5
Price: $$

Overall: 3.5/5

Would I use it again? Only if it was on Clearance or SALE!

Halloween 2012 / Dark & Bloody

Happy Halloween! Last year I have done something very similar to this year's look. I have created a vampiric look (inspired by True Blood & Fangtasia costumes). The very sexy top is a popular piece from American Apparel, Gloria V Bodysuit. As for my eyes, they are contact lenses from ClearlyContacts based out of Vancouver. For a full list of products see below:
  • NYC City Duet in 375 Devilish
  • OCC Lip Tar in Tarred - lightly tinted
  • N.Y.C. Skin Smooth Foundation in Ivory
  • Ardell Fright Night Cleopatra Lash Kit
  • Tube of fake blood
  • MAC Trace Gold Sheertone Shimmer Blush

Empties / August-September: Hair Products & Skin Care

I’ve been regularly hitting the pan, in other words, finishing up the products. In the last few months, I have finally completed quite a few. It feels rewarding to be able to finish. Finally! I’m glad I rarely throw out beauty items into the garbage, unless of course, it’s something that absolutely has to be thrown out. Take a look at the full list:

  • Dove Gentle Exfoliating Body Wash: 4/5 - skin feels smoother
  • Sexy Hair Curly Sexy Hair Shampoo: 4/5 - perfect for wavy hair
  • Philosophy Holiday Lights Aglow Shampoo and Body Wash: 3/5 - smells great, but somewhat drying and pricey, although, perfect for a bubble bath
  • Befine Skin Care line - provided by GlossyBox: 5/5 - excellent quality, natural, leaves skin glowing. I may purchase full size products, but it's hard to find, and their online assortment seems limited.
  • Clarks Botanicals - from Glymm bag: 4/5 - a very good resurfacing moisturizer, but very expensive at full price
  • Herbaflor Organic RoseHip Oil: 4/5 - the oil is quickly absorbant, nourishing, prevents skin damage, and smoothes out wrinkles
  • Lancome Bienfait Multi-Vital Moisturizing Cream: 4/5 - affordable, high quality, non-greasy cream that  is perfect for daily use - with spf 30
  • Joico K-PAK Revitaluxe: 3/5 - it's OK, I didn't find it all that great.
  • Cyberderm Moisturizer Samples from Glymm: 4/5 These are very potent and creamy, and seem like a good investment in the future.
  • Got2B Got 2 Be 2 Sexy Voluptuous Volume Mousse: 3/5 Works well, but feels somewhat sticky
  • John Frieda SheerBlonde Lightening Conditioner: 5/5 This is my favourite conditioner. It leaves my hair feeling smooth and silky, and makes the blonde highlights much brighter.
  • Naked Princess - Naked Shine Luscious Lip Gloss in Barely Nude - this was such a small sample from Glymm that I could barely notice a difference
  • Rimmel Hide the Blemish Concealer in Ivory 001: 4/5, full Review coming soon
  • Principessa - Bacio Me Lip Balm: Click Here for Review
  • Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Conditioner: 4/5 Great product for the price
  • Macadamia Natural Oil Healing Oil Treatment: 5/5 Amazing!
  • Macadamia Healing Oil Spray: 4/5 Amazing! full reviews to come
  • Vitamine & Sea Clay Mask: 3/5 - felt like any other clay mask
  • The Body Shop Natrulift Firming Day Cream with organic pomegranate: 3.5/5 Nothing special
  • Tom Ford Lavender Palm: 2/5 Smells like soap!
  • Atelier Cologne Trefle Pur: 4/5 Love it!
  • Olay Regenerist Moisturizer: 3/5 OK, but not great. Will not buy again.
  • Social Butterfly Hair Perfume: 3/5 Convenient to have in case of emergency hair day
  • CK One Eau De Toilette
  • Dove Damage Therapy Burst Conditioner
  • John Frieda Frizz Ease Sheet Solution Lightweight Frizz Control
  • Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner
  • Sebastian Volupt Shampoo: 4.5/5 Love, love love it! This is perfect for my hair, and I don't have to wash it as often.
  • Mai Couture Foundation Papier: 3/5 I like the idea, but it needs something more
  • Got2B Kinky Curling Mousse: 4/5 I love most products by Got2B. They are incredibly affordable and work very well. This one was no exception.
  • Victoria's Secret Island Waters Coconut Water & Pineapple Moisturizing Cream: 3.5/5 The scent is too strong, and I may have developed allergies.
  • Amir Argan Oil Moisturizing Conditioner: 2/5 Did absolutely nothing and it's quite pricey!

Mini Haul / Nudes Palette & More

Yet another haul! But not nearly as impressive as the one from last month. I am trying very hard to save up and quit spending on frivolous items. It is not easy because the temptation to spend is so great. I am so guilty of emotional spending. It's really hard to stop especially when we are constantly bombarded by good deals...in the shopping centres and online.

Product List:
  • Nudes Palette by Studio Makeup / Prestige Cosmetics / $25 at London Drugs. I think this palette is even better than the NYX version. The shadows are smooth and velvety.
  • John Frieda Sheer Blonde Lightening Conditioner / $10 - this is one of my favourite, and it really makes my hair lighter
  • Bed Head Urban Anti-dotes Recovery Shampoo / $10
  • Bewitching Eyes eye lashes by Fantasy Makers / $5
  • Loreal Total Repait Replenishing Mask / $5
  • NYC City Duet in 375 Devilish / $3

Closet Therapy: You are What You Wear

In the October edition of Women's Health magazine, I have come across an article that helped me realize so much about my closet habits. If you were to take a peek inside my closet, you would often see hung up or piling up layers on the floor clothes or emotions, goals, fears, and dreams. Oftentimes, my clothing choices tell a story that I honestly wasn't aware of. I have a messy, complicated relationship with my closet. Perhaps, like a messy fling or marriage.

According to the magazine, here are the five common wardrobe hang-ups.

1. I tend to rotate between black, white, and beige. So True for many of us. The diagnosis: This may reflect a fear of taking risks or that I am hoping to fade into the background or blend in with the crowd. The fix? Add a small splash of brightness via a tee or shoes.

2. My closet is filled with sale items that still have the tags on. This could mean that I've been trying to fill a void in my personal life with the instant high that comes from spending cash. It's like overloading on sale items you don't love is like having five fat free cookies instead of one real thing. For me, it's often about the quantity, not so much the quality. I want more & more. I know I have to stop. The fix? Leave your credit cards at home! Or put an item on hold, I would go back if it's something I truly love.

3. I own a lot of dresses or funky items that are hard to pull off at work. I shop for my fantasy life. Often imagining myself as a fashionista, stomping in high heels on the streets of Manhattan (think Sex and the City). The fix? I need to shop for items that can be worn in lots of settings.

4. I can't bear to ditch my very old clothes and those jeans that are too small. I cling on old items, regretting I've barely worn the pants, but now realizing it's out of style, and unfortunately, there's still hope that someday the pants will go back in style. I'm such a hoarder. I even hang out to packaging and clothing labels. The fix? If it's something I still love, but happens to be too tight or too lose, can be tailored! I must admit I have a sewing machine that I've bought out of impulse, thinking I will sew and make something amazing. Big sigh.

5. I can't see the clothes I have because my closet is so cluttered. It's been said that some people like to surround themselves with things that comfort them, such as lots of clothes, but this can actually have the opposite effect. Disorganization can in fact cause depression and anxiety, mood swings, feeling blue? I sure do! The fix? Today I spent many hours separating clothes by type: sweaters, pants, and so on are always together. Now, I tried to organize each category by colour, but that was a lot of work, and impossible to maintain everyday. I am simply too lazy to put the clothes away where it belongs...reds with reds. All of the items no longer in season are always out of sight. I stuffed the summer clothes into the suitcases and under the bed.

GlossyBox Canada / September 2012

GlossyBox September edition arrived on time, weighed a lot, and looked superb! I've been more than happy with the September's box. In Canada, the monthly price for GlossyBox is $15. So far, it's been worth it. The highlight of this box, is most definitely NYX the Crimson Amulet Set palette inspired by Dark Shadows. The palette is actually great for everyday use as it has many neutral shadows. I'm definitely in love. This is my first ever NYX palette and I'm looking forward to using it. I have heard many great things about NYX, and most recently, purchased their popular HD foundation. No complaints there! I hope to create a few interesting looks soon. As for the rest of the box, it wasn't as exciting. Most of us received a Wella hair product, nonetheless, I quite like Wella products, however, they've been appearing in the GlossyBox a bit too often. What do you think?

Product Review / Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector in Invisible Light

Clinique Pore Refining Instant Perfector minimizes the appearance of pores for a smooth and virtually flawless look. It is best used with finger-dotting technique and blended over pores alone, over or under makeup for touch-ups. In my experience, this perfector works best over liquid makeup, bb cream, or concealer. The mattifying effect is great for shiny t-zones, and gives my skin a smooth, even look. Overall, it lasts for many hours, and I don’t have to worry about blotting my t-zone. The pores disappear immediately. The result will be a matte, evened out skin tone with an airbrushed effect. However, this effect is only temporary, and the formulation is not an actual serum or a treatment. The key is to use a small amount, and not to overdo it, as the build-up could cause flakiness and easily rub off.

Collective Haul / NYX, MAC, & Freebies

I can't deny I've felt an overwhelming amount of guilt after purchasing these products you're about to see. I almost always convince myself that I absolutely need these in my ownership. I don't think these items are necessary, but I could not say no, especially not when it's a good deal, or when it's a highly rated and recommended product. Honestly, it makes me happy to have these. My eyes twinkle and I get so giddy, like a teenager, when I see new goodies in front me. Ah, the power of retail therapy. It's a love/hate relationship.

Product Review / Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream

Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream in #13 Bright Beige has been my go to makeup/primer for the last 8 months or so. I am already on my 3rd tube of 50ml.

What's a BB Cream? Most of you are already familiar with both Asian and Western BB creams and still would rather use Asian editions as the formulation is much better. There are many BB Creams available in the market - perhaps as many as a hundred of different types. A BB cream is similar to tinted moisturizer formula but with multiple functions. It can be anti-aging, whitening, and UV blocking. It usually provides lightweight to medium coverage and essentially is similar in texture and consistency to liquid lightweight makeup.

Glymm Bag August 2012 / Exciting New Products + FREE GIFT

I was very lucky this month. Glymm August came in a beautiful, black cosmetic bag with two full sized products - a skincare item, and a lip gloss. Unfortunately, many other subscribers were extremely disappointed - as many have not received anything in full size. I must confess, the reason why I have received that extra gift was the fact that I have contacted Glymm to cancel my subscription - they in turn offered a free gift. Nevertheless, it was a 'good' box. And I only wish Glymm would step up and invite more manufacturers to include their samples - let's face it...samples are cheap! and may not be worth much to many of the manufacturers. Despite that this month was almost excellent, next month may be awful again. I am going to cancel. Let's hope the cancellation process will go well. Fingers crossed.

Face of the Day / August 12 / Everyday Minerals

I have so many Everyday Minerals pigments that I decided to play with them just for fun - I was home and did not get to wear it out - but still enjoyed my time creating this look.

1. I cleaned and moisturized my face - with Clean & Clear Morning Burst Skin Brightening Facial Cleanser and Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer.
2. Used a silicone based Lise Watier Base Miracle primer for the face, and Spectrum Cosmetics primer for the eye lids.

Product Review / Green Beaver Apres-Ski Winter Face Cream

The Green Beaver Apres-Ski Winter Face Cream is not only 100% natural, but also vegan, gluten-free, and biodegradable. It's perfect for 'green' girls! As well as perfect for relieving damaged and dry skin. It's also Canadian and can be purchased online. When I found it at Winners (TJ MAXX) the cost was only $5.99. A really good deal, considering it lasts for a very long time - because of its richness you don't have to apply too much - a little goes a long way!

PROS:

  • Affordable
  • 100% Natural
  • Pleasant minty/vanilla/cinnamon scent
  • Nourishing, moisturizing without a greasy feeling
  • Excellent for preventing dry patches
  • Soft, buttery texture

CONS: Hard to find in stores, and must order online

Value: 4/5
Quality: 5/5
Performance: 5/5
Packaging: 5/5
Price: $$

Overall: 4.5/5

Lancome Haul - Free gift with purchase

A few weeks ago I was in need of a warm, bright red lipstick, and Lancome Rouge in Love came to mind. I strolled through the department store, looked at the brands in Sephora, but came back to Lancome. The youthful advertising featuring Emma Watson sure had an influence on me. And the best part was that there was a special offer, a gift with purchase. I ended up picking up Lancome Rouge Lipstick as well as the infamous, high quality, under eye concealer - it's amazing and I've used it before.

Lancome is definitely one of my favourite brands and never disappoints.

GlossyBox Canada July 2012 - Into the Summer

The July GlossyBox Canada was disappointing. The products did not seem high end at all - in fact, most of the brands can be found in Superstore, London Drugs or Shoppers Drug Mart at a discounted/sale price. So, in a way, this wasn't much of a deal nor was it exciting. The approximate value of this box is $25. This must've been the weakest month yet. I really hope to see a better selection next month.

Glymm Bag July 2012 / Skincare Overload

Glymm Bag July 2012 came in an orange cosmetic bag, it looked promising at first, but ended up being mediocre at best since all of the samples were skincare or haircare related. I didn't want to say it, but, yes, I was a little bit disappointed. I believe my last box will be August!

C+ is the grade for this month's box...and I am in the process of sending a cancellation notice to the Glymm team. Although, I love their overall brand. I love their website and the creative team is doing an excellent job maintaing the look and feel of their graphics. Sorry, but, it didn't work out.

However, there was a product, the Dirt Salt Scrub, that I absolutely loved and ended up buying! It's quite pricy, at $45 for 12oz, but of wonderful texture; it works well for acne-prone skin!

Product List:

Mini Haul / Revlon, theBalm, NYX & More

I've dramatically decreased my makeup and skincare spendings in the last few months because I've been subscribing to both Glymm and GlossyBox Canada. I am using the samples that came in sampling boxes, and everything else I own until it's all empty. I feel such extreme guilt if I don't use the products I buy. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to resist these impulse buys:

  • Missha M Vita BB Cream with SPF 20 - I love it! Skin felt so smooth afterwards
  • Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in Light - not too shabby, review to come!
  • theBalm Shady Lady eye shadow in Caught in the Act - impressive! and it was on sale
  • Sally Hansen Salon Effects Polish Strips in Kitty, Kitty - these are purrrfect for a night out!
  • Nicka K Body Shimmer - perfect for that bronzed body look
  • Revlon Grow Luscious by Fabulash with Colorstay Eyeliner - this mascara is awful, and one of the worst for summer weather. I think I will be throwing it out, but keeping the eyeliner
  • NYX Shadow Eye Pencil in Cottage Cheese - I love it! I've been using it daily.

P.S. Don't forget to enter my Summer Giveaway!

Glossy Box Canada / June Edition

Summer is officially here! And so is the June edition of Glossy Box Canada. Ah, the box was incredibly heavy. I was very excited to open it - and it did not disappoint. Every month so far has been good - with an array of products from many different brands. The one brand that is often in every box is definitely Wella, but this brand produces high quality products. So far, we've been receiving either Wella or Sebastian, and both worked wonderfully on my thick, unmanageable hair. If you haven't tried Glossy Box, try it here.
